join the protest, join the democracy.
On December 30, facing scrutiny and censure over the Afghan detainee abuse scandal and the opportunity to appoint more senators, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Parliament would be prorogued until March 3rd. With this attack on our democracy Canadians across our country became outraged by our Prime Minister’s abuse of power. For not only has he wasted millions and millions of taxpayer money in Members of Parliament lost time, he has weakened our nations democratic foundation. Though Stephen Harper has closed Parliament, democracy still exists, and it exists in the actions you take on Saturday January 23rd. At 1pm come to the corner of Gordon and Hwy 97 and join the protest, join the democracy.
Just a Few of the Bills Scrapped Because of Stephen Harper’s Suspension of Parliament:
S-5 Long-Gun Registry Repeal Act
S-6 An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (accountability with respect to political loans)
S-7 An Act to amend the Constitution Act, 1867 (Senate term limits)
C-8 An Act to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and to make related and consequential amendments to
other Acts
C-19 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (investigative hearing and recognizance with conditions)
C-26 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (auto theft and trafficking in property obtained by crime)
C-34 An Act to amend the Criminal Code and other Acts (Protecting Victims From Sex Offenders Act)
C-42 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (Ending Conditional Sentences for Property and Other Serious Crimes Act)
C-53 An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (accelerated parole review) and to make
consequential amendments to other Act (Protecting Canadians by Ending Early Release for Criminals Act)
The Cost to Taxpayers for Prorogation:
There are 308 Members of Parliament, each one earning $147,700 a year. With most of the Bills being scrapped from last year, that is a year of wasted salaries for our MPs and Senators. Not including the fact that each MP has two assistants and that Cabinet members make thousands of dollars more, the cost of lost work just from the House of Commons for the last year is more than 4.5 million dollars. The cost of proroguement is even greater when one adds the wasted time of Senators and other bureaucrats. To top it off though, in addition to the last year’s work being scrapped, with Stephen Harper suspending Parliament, our MPs and Senators are given an extra 22 days paid off. That’s plus the time they already have off for the Olympics!
Never has a stand meant so much as the stand we make on January 23rd. It is on this Saturday across Canada that we as Canadians protect our democracy from the very Prime Minister we entrusted to govern it. We as Canadians will show democracy is more then something you can suspend, it is in each and every one of us who cares, who wants a better country and a better tomorrow. Democracy may be shut from the Parliament, but with protests this Saturday it will be in the heart and mind of every Canadian making a stand against this prorogation, against this blatant abuse of power.
