Dear All:
Thanks for all this great work, everyone. According to Library of Parliament info. service, the Speaker of the House of Commons (Mr. Peter Milliken (Lib, Kingston & Islands), email: MilliP@parl.gc.ca), is responsible for opening the Parliament Building and the House of Commons chamber to MPs. Please communicate with him, and MPs, asking them to open the House chamber and meet there on the 25th. Is anyone planning to actually be on The Hill on the 25th to observe that MPs who choose to enter the House will actually be able to do so? Anything like that?
Best wishes,
Kevan Bowkett

So, how did that rally in TO work out for you ?. Wow. 35 “protesters”. All that proves is that it’s more convienent to join a facebook page than actually get off your duff and do something you believe in.
There is talk that Michael Ignatieff, Paul Dewar and Elizabeth May will address the protest in Ottawa this weekend.
I want to attend this protest, but I feel this is a grass roots movement and the politicians are only going to increase the partisanship that is already too evident on Parliament Hill. That partisanship is part of the problem, not the solution.

Brad, I know how you feel about the political parties. There is a fine line between this being a real grass roots protests and being viewed as something run by the political parties. Hopefully the media does their job and shows that even though politicians may be attending events, they didn’t somehow “create” this anger and didn’t have any hand in planning it.
But ultimately, if the opposition parties all stand together on that stage and commit to doing something to fix our democratic deficit then it will be a real bipartisan message and our protest will have had an impact.
Because frankly, Harper isn’t going to listen, and they aren’t going to unprorogue. What needs to happen is systematic changes to how our democracy works, some small, some big, to avoid this kind of abuse of power.
1) The turn-out will be significant, but not overwhelming.
The “righties” will estimate the numbers by half. The “lefties” will double their count. There will little discussion of actual content.
2) Somewhere across the country, there will be a dust-up with police.
The “lefties” will blame “neo-con” infiltrators. The “righties” will blame student agitators. Ultimately, it will just be professional s-disturbers who couldn’t care either way.
3) A month from now, Sidney Crosby will have a gold medal, we will still have 90% employment, Haiti will be recovering thanks in part to the best place to live in the world – Canada.
4) Two months from now, Prorogation will be a forgotten word, and Canadians will learn to count their blessings, and quit whining.
I just had a count of the comments on this site. I see 15 comments in FIFTEEN DAYS! (OK 16 with this one).
And you guys are trying to paint this as some kind of transformative political issue?!? Why do I bother?
Good gawd folks, the government is still functioning. All they did was shut the doors on a big wooden room where white men bang tables and yell at each other. It’s shut for 10 days!!!!
Imagine if you whiners lived in a country that had real problems……

See my first point from my first comment. No comment on my content, but a numbers dispute.
My point is, look at a few other countries on this planet:
Haitians have lost entire families, and their cities are obliterated.
Iran is undergoing simmering political and social unrest due to stolen elections and a murderous regime.
Afghanistan – what a mess (thanks to the Libs for getting us in there….).
Pakistan has terrorists on the precipice of taking control of nuclear weapons
Widespread instability in Zimbabwe thanks to Mugabe.
Greece and Iceland are completely broke.
Israel-Palestine – well, nuff said.
Canada – a bunch of facebookers, who probably couldn’t name their own MP, are livid because rich suits in Ottawa are not going to scream at each other for a few weeks.
Will these rallies transform the Canadian political landscape the way the coalition rallies of last year? Yeesh, I had more people at my last naked poetry reading.
Hey, I’m glad kids are getting involved in politics – cripes, we know none of them vote.
The CBC and Toronto Star should be impressed with themselves for whipping this non-story into a media frenzy (…and..ashamed of themselves…).
Adolf Harper hopes the Olympics will distract us from the truth of his autocratic rule, lets rock everyone of these rallies. Be as loud as possible, demand change… WE NEED CHANGE.
Read this to give you some perspective to whats going on here.

Because you’re all so clueless I’ll tell you how it’s done:
Instead of whining, rallying and putting up posters (yeesh!)
You should be FLOODING the opposition MP’s with calls to defeat the gov’t at the earliest opportunity.
THAT’S the DEMOCRATIC way to defeat a government.
And if the self-serving bunch in the opposition wants to wait until June so their gold-plated pensions kick in, then go shout at THEM.
They’re the ones who are the threat to democracy.
Glad I could help.

As you can see the comment is putting down/dissuading the efforts of non-partisan rallies. The admin then inserted a comment after the fact (only accessible to admins) and said that the comment was from Citizen & Immigration Canada. Interesting.
I would recommend contacting the site admins for more info but it seems like the Conservatives are dabbling in China-style internet info-wars by posting fake comments under the guise of a anonymous person for their own interest.
Thought you might like to know.

From a “Why he did it” article by Craig Oliver, Chief Parliamentary Correspondent, CTV News:
“It just was all too tempting. Cut the pulpit out from under the jabbering nuisances in the opposition party for the winter. A free ride then into the Olympics, and in the rosy afterglow of that, a throne speech and a budget in which the Government would congratulate itself on an economic recovery. Then world leaders would be converging on Canada for a G-20 meeting. That would give the prime minister a clear path to visit the Governor General and ask her for a dissolution of Parliament and an election. Or perhaps just call her and tell her to do it.”

FIVE PROTEST PREDICTIONS
1) The turn-out will be significant, but not overwhelming.
The “righties” will estimate the numbers by half. The “lefties” will double their count. There will little discussion of actual content.
2) Somewhere across the country, there will be a dust-up with police.

4) Two months from now, Prorogation will be a forgotten word, and Canadians will learn to count their blessings, and quit whining.
5) Three of the predictions above will come true.
